If you’re anything like me, and love games, then you will definitely want to attend this year’s Come Out & Play Festival. This is a night of street games that transforms New York City and San Francisco into an enormous playground. What began in 2006 as a humble gathering has now amassed into a huge weekend event.
Things to Do in NYC: Public Games in New York City
Every year, thousands of people gather to engage in public games. Whether it is racing through the city in a large game of zombie tag or pummeling pigeons with wiffleball bats (don’t worry, they are made out of Papier-mache!). The great thing about such events is that players get to participate in a fun-filled night. In addition, they interact with game designers and other fellow game enthusiasts.
Things to Do in NYC: Governors Island
This year, Come Out & Play will be comprised of three events: After Dark, (July 18th in Dumbo, Brooklyn from 7pm onwards), Field Day (July 19th on Governors Island, Parade Ground Field from 11AM to 5PM), and Family Day (July 19th on Governors Island from 11AM to 4PM).
Things to Do in NYC: Dumbo
After Dark will turn the streets of Dumbo into a real life outdoor arcade. Moreover, it will have social party games, street games, and actual physical video games. In addition, Field Day will involve sports and other field games. Family Day calls for the participation of the whole family in an epic Time Travel adventure.
Ultimately, founders Nick Fortugno, Mattia Romeo, Catherine Herdlick, Peter Lee, and Greg Trefry wanted to make sure that these games engage the community. Active participation is a must. Sign up for a game, become a volunteer, or help design and run a game yourself!
Best of all, the games are entirely free. Thus, make sure to get there early, as sign-up is on a first come, first serve basis.
