Eager for another epic adventure? In preparation for Halloween, how about visiting some of the most creepy, abandoned places from around the world? Satiate your inner need for adrenaline or go cry in a corner, like me.
Creepy Places To Visit: Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital (Gyeonggi, Korea)
This abandoned hospital looks like the setting of a horror movie. According to a local legend, the building was shut down after patients began to mysteriously die off about ten years ago. Today, it is considered one of South Korea’s three major haunted sides.
Creepy Places To Visit: Battleship Island (Nagasaki, Japan)
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or “Battleship Island” (the island resembles a warship) was once a busy home to thousands of coalmine workers in the 1950s. Now, the 60,000 sq. meter area is filled with abandoned buildings and concrete ruins. It was entirely closed off in 2009, but travelers are now allowed to explore the site.
Creepy Places To Visit: Six Flags New Orleans
Six Flag’s tagline “More Flags, More Fun” has drawn eager visitors to its theme park for years. In 2002, a New Orleans amusement park called Jazzland, was upgraded and renamed Six Flags. For a few years, the Mardi Gras-themed area boasted a nice collection of rides, until Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. The city now plans to put a mall in its place, but for now, it’s a great place to trespass (no arrest warrants please.)
Creepy Places To Visit: Danvers State Hospital
There’s something about hospitals that give me the “hibbie jibbies”. With lovely nicknames such as the “State Lunatic Hospital”, and “Danvers Lunatic Asylum”, the Danvers State Hospital in Massachusetts is no exception. During the 1920s and ‘30s, rumors began running rapid about the institution’s use of shock therapy and frontal lobotomies (maybe even the birthplace for the procedure). In 1992, it was officially shut down.
Creepy Place To Visit: Anderlecht Veterinary School
The Anderlecht Veterinary School in Anderlecht Brussels was deserted since the ‘90s. The last remaining, un-renovated building (out of 19), is filled with jars and jars of questionable contents – from old syringes, medical equipment and a variety of animal remains and fluids. The best part is the animal heads and brains scattered throughout the building – just the cherry on top, in my opinion. As such, this place has rightfully earned its nickname, the “Horror Labs.”
Creepy Places To Visit: Beelitz Heilstatten Military
Southwest of Berlin lies an abandoned sanatorium, which was built to threat the explosion of tuberculosis that ran rapid in the late 1800s. It was also used as a military hospital during World War I and II, even catering to Adolf Hitler after he wounded his leg. It has been empty since the early ‘90s, ever since the Soviet Union state dissolution.
Creepy Places To Visit: Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra
This former psychiatric hospital in Tuscany, Italy was once home to over 6,000 mental patients, but was eventually shut down in 1978 because of its cruel practices. According to legend, once a patient entered this facility, he or she never returned home. Carvings that cover the walls of the courtyard stand as living testaments to that story.
